The Ears and Eyes of a Child

May 17, 2009. This was a special weekend in many ways. Suzanne, Mike, Kristi and grandkids were all here and my brother, Steve, also joined us on his way to Wisconsin. A nice reunion for all of us. Whenever the grandkids come to Nappanee we always go to the Little Paws Playground (AKA known by the grandkids as "Castle Park"). While we were "running around and playing", little Joshua (3) heard a train. Just a note: Nappanee has about 60 trains that pass through on a daily basis. He said, "Mamaw, can we go see the train?". Well, away we went, walking downtown to the Nappanee Depot Plaza. Once we got there it was about a 20 minute wait until the first train came through. Then within the next 30 minutes we saw two more. What an exciting adventure and one that not only will the kids remember, but we adults will too. I can remember departing from the old train station when I was a first grader - Every year the first grade classes all got to have a train trip from Nappanee to Syracuse. What a thrill.
