Boat Club Outing to Cabbage Key

A boat trip to Cabbage Key was one of the Harbor Isles Boat Club outings for this season. Our bridge (officers) planned this event last April. The excursion began from Fisherman's Village in Punta Gorda and traveled 22 miles to the private Island of Cabbage Key.

On the Island is an historic old Florida Resort that was established in 1944. Obviously the only way to get there is by boat. They claim that this was the place that Jimmy Buffet was inspired to write "Cheeseburgers in Paradise". Of course Key West claims that also. However, it is a nice piece of Paradise. There are also rooms that you can rent at the inn or small homes if you want to vacation on the island.

The Island totes: "One hundred acres of tropical vegetation surround our historic restaurant, inn and cottages.... There are no cars here, not even a paved road. You will find winding nature trails, picturesque views and relaxation". The main house, now the Cabbage Key Inn and Restaurant, was built in the 1930's by the family of playwright and novelist Mary Roberts Rinehart. Today the island is still privately owned and has changed ownership 4-5 times. The pictures were taken from the water tower where you could get a nice panoramic view.
